CASE STUDY
Beyond the Textbook:
Using AI and ChemFORWARD
to Teach Real-World Green Chemistry
A recent case study published in the Journal of Chemical Education, by Dr. Ji Kim of Guttman Community College-City University of New York (CUNY), showcases the successful integration of ChemFORWARD and AI chatbots in an undergraduate organic chemistry laboratory. The activity challenged students to synthesize cyclohexene from cyclohexanol using safer, more sustainable catalysts. Students leveraged AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot to explore greener alternatives to traditional reagents, aligning their choices with the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry. They then validated that the AI recommendations were indeed safer using ChemFORWARD and instructor feedback. Catalysts such as Amberlyst-15 and even dried orange peels were tested, demonstrating the practical considerations and benefits of eco-conscious substitutions.
Regarding the use of ChemFORWARD in the classroom, Dr. Kim stated, "Using ChemFORWARD in this project brought meaningful, real-world context to green chemistry education. Rather than relying solely on textbook and SDS [Safety Data Sheet] hazard information, students engaged with a comprehensive chemical hazard assessment tool that professional chemists and industry use. This integration helped students validate AI-generated suggestions for safer reagents, encouraging critical evaluation instead of passive acceptance. Importantly, ChemFORWARD facilitated informed decision-making and fostered a deeper understanding of how to design safer experiments."
The NextGen Chem program aims to provide free access to 100 classrooms each semester, with the goal of exposing up to 4,000 students per year and ultimately reaching 20,000 future chemists, toxicologists, and scientists over the next five years. Educators are encouraged to join this movement to better prepare the next generation of scientists with the skills needed to advance sustainability through chemistry.
